What area do you serve for foster care?
We serve Fresno, Kings, Madera and Tulare County. 

Must I live in a house to be a foster parent?
You can live in a house or an apartment.  As long as there is adequate space and the home passes a simple home inspection.

How long does it take to become certified as a foster parent?
The process can take anywhere from 1-3 months.  It will depend on the prospective foster parent’s willingness to speed up the process. 

Do I need special training?
Yes, CPR and First Aid training is required as well as twelve hours of foster parent training.  During the foster parent certification process, we will provide you with a list of places you can attend to receive these trainings.

Are there vehicle requirements?
Yes.  You do need a vehicle in order to transport children to all needed appointment such as; therapy, medical appointments and possible visits with biological family.   Basic liability Vehicle insurance is also required along with a DMV report you can obtain from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Will a social worker be assigned to assist?
Yes, you will be assigned a social worker to the child’s case that will conduct weekly home visits to ensure everything is going well. 

What happens if I have a problem during the evening or on the weekend?
An on-call social worker is available 24 hrs. to assist with any emergencies and/or crisis that arise during non-business hours.

Will the child’s birth family be visiting or phoning?
Yes, depending on the specifics of the case.  The minors may have visits with biological family or have phone contact with them. 

Am I free to discipline the children as I see fit?
You can discipline the child as you see fit as long as you do not use corporal punishment. 

How long does a child usually remain in placement?
A child can stay in your home for a couple of days, months or even years.  It depends on the biological family’s situation and their ability to reunify back with their children. 

Will I receive any type of payment for the care of a child in my home?
Yes, you will receive a monthly reimbursement for the minor while he/she is placed in your home.  You can receive up to $836.00 per child. 

What is the maximum number of children allowed in a home?
As long as you have room in your home, you can have up to six children in your home.   This includes biological children as well.

How many children may sleep in one bedroom?
Two children per room are allowed.  Boys and girls of the opposite gender under the age of 5 can share a bedroom.  Children older than 5 years old will have to share a room with a child in the same gender group. 

May I specify the ages and sex of the children who are placed in my home?
Yes, once you become certified, you let the staff know what age and gender preference you prefer.

What are the costs in becoming a Foster Parent?
There is very minimal cost to be a foster parent.  The costs include;
 Fingerprints $55.00
 CPR & First Aid training - $49.99
 DMV report $5.00
 TB test and Physical approx. $65.00 depending if you have health insurance.
