On December 13, 2010, Proteus acquired a “Green” Mobile Unit. The 38-foot Mobile Unit was customized to meet new energy efficiency standards – ability to run on biodiesel, power generated by a four-panel solar system on the roof, and a hybrid electrical/biodiesel quiet generator. Funding for the new Green Mobile Unit was received from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 in coordination with the California Department of Community Services and Development.
The Green Mobile Unit is designed to reach rural communities in our service area (Fresno, Kings, Kern, Tulare and Los Angeles Counties) to promote sustainable energy, promote green sector employment opportunities and to deliver information on energy assistance programs to low-income individuals. As an energy partner with Southern California Edison, Southern California Gas Company and Pacific Gas & Electric, Proteus’ Energy Programs offer services, such as refrigerator replacement, evaporative cooler installation, weatherization, CFL installation, attic insulation, CARE/FERA application assistance, and more, to eligible customers throughout the region. The Green Mobile Unit will also be utilized to recruit and enroll students into Proteus’ Solar and Weatherization Career and Technical Education classes.
The unit is equipped with two flat screen televisions with remote web conferencing capabilities, seven 22-inch touch screen computer stations, Verizon 3G WIFI network capabilities, a fax machine, an interview area and portable classrooms with distance learning capabilities. This unit also features interactive and visual displays created by Proteus’ own solar class students and Proteus’ Energy Division staff. The Green Mobile Unit will complement Proteus’ existing Mobile Employment Center (MEC), which is certified by Tulare County and Fresno County Workforce Investment Boards as a One-Stop location to provide WIA services to eligible participants.
