William M. Maguy School of Education

Proteus, Inc. was established in 1967. The primary focus was to educate migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their families in the areas of enhancing their English language and basic education skills in Tulare County. At the time, Proteus offered eight classes and was an extension of the Tulare County Community Action Agency. By 1968, classes dramatically increased and Proteus was able to serve over 2,000 adults in the areas of English as a Second Language (ESL), Drivers Education, Sewing and Auto Mechanics.
In 1972 Proteus became a non-profit 501(c) community based organization and was able to expand services in Tulare, Kern, Kings and Fresno counties. Today, Proteus offers educational programs in the areas of Academic instruction and Career and Technical Education. These programs are geared towards individuals who need to enhance their basic skills, obtain a GED, or obtain skills in a specific vocation. Most of Proteus’ classes are short term open entry\open exit programs. To date, Proteus continues to educate individuals just like you!
