PROTEUS, INC. STANDARD SCHOLARSHIP 2016-2017 ($500)

Deadline to Apply:  April 1, 2016

WILLIAM M. MAGUY SCHOLARSHIP 2016-2017  ($1,000)

Deadline to Apply: April 29, 2016

For many economically disadvantaged people, the dream of higher education cannot become a reality without financial assistance.  Realizing this challenge, Proteus awards several scholarships to deserving students through a competitive application process.

Proteus, Inc. has given out hundreds of academic scholarships to students since the scholarship program began in 1992.  Funding these scholarships is made possible through a variety of committee fundraising efforts, as well as through the generosity of Proteus employees who contribute their dollars each pay period.

Scholarship Types

Standard Scholarship

Qualifying applicants must be low-income farmworkers, low-income Proteus customers (within the last two years), or a family member of either category. The amount and number of standard scholarships issued depends on available funds each year.   Acceptance of Scholarship Applications is typically announced in January of each year.

Applicant Criteria:

  • Applicant family must be low income: Please refer to attached California Alternative Rates for Energy Assistance Program Guidelines (attached)
  • Must have received a service from Proteus within the last 2 years. (if over 18 years of age)
  • Parents must have received a service from Proteus within the last 2 years.
  • Must live in either: Kern, Kings, Fresno, or Tulare Counties
  • Your enrollment status must be full time for 2016-2017 school year.
  • Plan to attend a two or four-year College, or an accredited Post –secondary institute.
  • Student not eligible to apply for scholarship are: Proteus employees, their immediate relatives.
    • Immediate relatives are wife, husband, son, daughter, mother, father, sister, step-parents, and stepchild.

Requirements:

  • Scholarship Application Form must be signed by applicant/ parent or legal guardian if under the age of 18.
  • Typed personal Statement
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Completed application and attachments must be postmarked by April 1, 2016.
  • If awarded and prior to scholarship disbursement an enrollment and payment verification will be requested to demonstrate full-time college enrollment.

Selection Criteria – selection is based on the following:

  2. Personal Statement
  3. Letters of Reference- the applicant must provide two or more letters of reference.
  4. Interview with selection committee

Farmworker/Proteus Customer- the applicant or family member must self-certify that they are or have been a farmworker OR enrolled in any Proteus program during the past two years.  Applicant must also complete the income section in full to certify low-income status.

Employment-must not have been employed by Proteus during past two years.

Residency-must reside in geographic area served by Proteus programs or if attending an out of area state college must provide proof of family residency in one of the four counties (Kings, Kern, Tulare and Fresno)

Educational status-must be or will enroll as a full-time student in a degree program at a college or university, and provide proof prior to awarding funds.

4.       Interview with selection committee

 

William M. Maguy Scholarship

In memory of Proteus’s long serving CEO, this $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a community -minded individual seeking a career in the social service field.  One William M. Maguy Scholarship is awarded annually.  Acceptance of Scholarship Applications is typically announced in June of each year.

Applicant Criteria:

  • Must be enrolled in a Social Service field degree program including but not limited to:
    • Political science
    • Religious Studies
    • Liberal Arts
    • Communications
    • Urban studies
    • Sociology
    • Public Administration
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or Higher
  • Must show proof of community involvement
  • Must complete the application in full
  • Must complete a concise essay on topic
  • Must reside in either, Kern, Kings, Fresno or Tulare Counties
    • If attending a College out of the area a parent must reside in one of the four counties mentioned above.
  • Your enrollment status must be full time in a degree program for 2016-2017 school year. With a College, University or an accredited Post-Secondary institute.
  • Must live in either: Kern, Kings, Fresno, or Tulare Counties
  • Student not eligible to apply for scholarship are: Proteus employees, their immediate relatives.
    • Immediate relatives are spouse, children, step-children, parents, step parents, brother, sister.

  • Typed Essay
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Copy of most recent transcripts
  • Completed application and attachments must be postmarked by deadline.
  • If awarded and prior to scholarship disbursement an enrollment and payment verification will be requested to demonstrate full-time college enrollment.



Selection Criteria- selection is based on the following:

  1. William M. Maguy Scholarship Application
  2. Letters of Reference- the applicant must provide two or more letters of reference.
  3. Community or Leadership Involvement- applicant must provide a listing of community and leadership involvement.
  4. A concise essay (topic to be announced at the time of application).
