Education and Training
Almost all employers indicate that recent hires have at least high school or the equivalent education.
Skills & Other Requirements
Technical skills for pest controllers include the ability to apply principles of hazardous and toxic waste disposal, read blueprints, implement safe work practices. The possession of a Pest Control Applicator Certificate, a valid driver's license, and a pest control license are also very important.
Physical skills include the ability to climb ladders, climb to high places, tolerate dust and unpleasant odors, and lift 50 lbs. repeatedly.
Personal skills include the ability to work independently. The possession of a good DMV driving record and public contact skills and a willingness to work with close supervision are also important.
Advancement
Most employers surveyed report promotional opportunities to positions such as Supervisor, Assistant Manager, and Branch Manager.
