Since its inception in 1967, Proteus, Inc. has been in a continuous state of evolution, adding and expanding services as the changing needs of the workforce and local communities emerge. Initially an adult training center serving low-income residents through educational services, Proteus has materialized as a nationally recognized full service agency that provides a wide range of services to a diverse customer base. Most fitting the name Proteus originates from Greek mythology as a sea god which means “versatile”, “mutable,” “capable of assuming many forms.” The adjective word protean has positive connotations of flexibility, versatility, and adaptability.

                     Proteus, Inc. Announces CEO Departure

Visalia, CA - Proteus, Inc. announces the departure of Chief Executive Officer Michael E. McCann, effective September 2, 2016. McCann is leaving after more than 32 years at Proteus, Inc., having served as CEO since 2000. Robert Alcazar, currently serving as Executive Director/COO, will succeed McCann as Chief Executive Officer.

“On behalf of the Proteus, Inc. Board of Directors, I would like to thank Mike for his service to the organization, its employees, and its customers. Under his direction, the organization has a strong foundation. His commitment to ensuring a customer-focused corporate culture, financial stability, and diverse funding streams, will benefit the underserved in local communities for years to come,” states Richard Rodriguez, Proteus Inc. Board Chair.
McCann joined Proteus, Inc. in 1984 as Data Systems Manager, bringing the organization into the 21st century with new reporting and accounting systems. McCann went on to become Chief Financial Officer, securing assets and bringing stability to the organization. The years of technical, fiscal, and program experience made his succession to CEO a natural transition.

Under McCann’s leadership, Proteus, Inc. received the California Award of Performance Excellence (CAPE) Prospector Award in 2004 and the California Award of Performance Excellence (CAPE) Eureka Award in 2007. Mike served on the Board of Directors of La Cooperativa, an alliance made up of organizations who serve Migrant and Seasonal Farmworkers in the Western United States. He has also served as Treasurer of the Western Alliance Farmworker Advocates (WAFA), and on the California Association Re-entry and Employment Services.

It’s been quite an eventful journey with many ups and downs,” said Mike McCann. “Many thanks to a dedicated staff who helped the organization not only endure, but grow. The future looks bright for Proteus.”

Proteus, Inc. is hosting a retirement party in honor of McCann’s 32 years of service. Join us on Friday, September 30 as Proteus, Inc. gives a legendary send off to an extraordinary man.
