Since its inception in 1967, Proteus, Inc. has been in a continuous state of evolution, adding and expanding services as the changing needs of the workforce and local communities emerge. Initially an adult training center serving low-income residents through educational services, Proteus has materialized as a nationally recognized full service agency that provides a wide range of services to a diverse customer base. Most fitting the name Proteus originates from Greek mythology as a sea god which means “versatile”, “mutable,” “capable of assuming many forms.” The adjective word protean has positive connotations of flexibility, versatility, and adaptability.

Proteus, Inc. Board of Directors to Fill Vacancy

Proteus, Inc. invites applicants from Kern or Kings County to apply for (1) vacancy on its twelve member tri-partite Board of Directors.   Board members represent the public, private, and low-income economic sectors in four of Proteus’s service delivery areas:   Tulare, Kings, Kern, and Fresno Counties.   The current vacancy is for a low-income representative residing in Kern or Kings Counties.

The Board of Directors is responsible for providing overall direction and leadership to Proteus and its staff to ensure that Proteus’s mission statement is carried out.

The Proteus, Inc. Board meets eight times a year, including a one day retreat in April and a two day retreat in October. Members are required to serve at least on one of its standing committees that meet telephonically or in person prior to each board meeting.   Applicants should be willing to actively participate in board and committee meetings, promote and advocate Proteus’s mission to the community.

Proteus, Inc. is a non-profit, community-based organization with over 48 years of experience serving farmworkers and other low-income residents in the Central Valley Counties of Fresno, Kings, Kern, Tulare and Los Angeles. Some of the programs Proteus, Inc. offers include adult basic and vocational education, job training, employment-related services, family self-sufficiency, gang prevention, childcare, and other human services programs aimed at helping individuals and families. Proteus, Inc. is also a California Award of Performance Excellence (CAPE) award winner.
